Mold Making

Another Christmas gift that we saved for the summer (mainly because it seemed too complicated!) was a Mold Making kit. It was tons of fun! I wasn't sure if it would really work and I explained that to the kids so that they wouldn't be disappointed. Carson was up first and decided to make a mold of her hand. She had to hold her hand still for 10 minutes in the mold mixture. She could not touch the bottom of the pan that we had the mixture in so that the details on the bottom of her hand could be molded. She was fabulous holding her hand steady for so long! She then had to carefully pull her hand out of the mold and next we mixed the plaster-like substance to pour into the mold. I REALLY had no idea if it would work or not!

Christopher went next. He decided that his foot would be easier to make a mold of rather than his hand. And we let him press his foot down into the mixture so that maybe the mold could sit upright with the details of the top of his foot showing. We chose this because we thought it would be the easiet position for Christopher to remain still in. :) HA! He had his foot in the mixture for less than a minute and he starting freaking out! "THIS IS SO HARD STAYING STILL!" He really got stressed! 10 minutes really did seem like an eternity to all of us! While Carson and I thought that it was super funny, Christopher didn't seem to find it as humorous as we did! :)

We let the molds dry for a bit and then poured the cast mixture into the molds. Even though the directions stated that they would be ready in 40 minutes, we opted to wait until the next morning to peel the molds off of the casts. The kids were ready early in the morning to get started!

And check out the results! You can't tell from the pictures, but Carson's hand turned out FABULOUS! Christopher's foot...not so much! :) (I had to make him smile for the pic...he was mad!!) His foot is weird looking and then a toe fell off! :) We will be searching for some other mold product so that he too can make a cast of his hand. (The down side of waiting to use Christmas gifts during the summer!) Overall, the project turned out much better than I could have expected and it took a L-O-N-G time to create too! :)
